Lyft launches a new self-driving division and will develop its own autonomous ride-hailing technology

Lyft is betting the future of the road midsts on sharing autonomous vehicles. It aims to be at the vanguard of information and communication technologies with a new self-driving discord and a self-driving organization “manufacturers ” could plug into their self-driving cars.

The company expects to hire hundreds of people for the new division by the end of next year and has just indicated a lease for 50,000 -square-feet on the first floor of a Palo Alto facility where it plans to build out various laboratories and open testing infinites. The building Lyft refers to as Level 5 will be developing its brand-new open self-driving platform and a combining hardware and software system still in development. Lyft hopesauto creators will then bring in a fleet of autonomous gondolas to its ride-hailing network.

The plan is somewhat similar to one Uber announced earlier. Lyfts bigger competitive implements Volvos XC9 0 to measure its self-driving tech on the roads. Uber announced earlier this year it was alsopartnering with Daimler to operate self-driving autoes on its network.

In Lyfts corner, theres GM, Waymo, JLR and a recently announced self-driving pilot program with the Boston-based autonomous car tech startup Nutonomy.

Lyfts main strategy detective Raj Kapoor wouldnt provide comments on comparings between the two but did say Lyft had the means to attract top endowment, a inventory of trusted marriages and critical data needed to build out the system.

A lot of what will come out of this system seems TBD for now. Lyft will still need to hire that top ability, build out its engineering squad and work out how to share data with each car manufacturer it marriages with.

There may also be some regulatory issues. Comma.ai canceled sales of its own self-driving paraphernalium, which admitted certain vehicles to gain autopilot-like road driving succour cleverness, after a warning word from the National Highway and Travel Safety Administration( NHTSA ). The questions stanch from regulations around selling such a paraphernalium. Rather than fighting the NHTSA, Comma.ai afterward open-sourced the blueprint for the paraphernalium, admitting anyone to improve it themselves for free.

However, Lyft hires a team to work on regulatory matters and has built in-roads in Washington for other issues in the past.

The other thing to consider, with all this talk of unleashing the unmanned robots to drive us, is the fee it will take on Ubers and Lyfts human moves. Though Lyft concludes the working day we supersede all the humans is far off, it procreates fiscal sense for ridesharing a corporation to veer down that course and autonomous vehicles will inevitably take over at some point.

Lyft has said in the past that these motorists could transition into new personas within the company and that the new technology will create new jobs. Its not clear if all the motorists would get different jobs, how many places would be created or how much theyd be paid. Its too not clear if theyd go for a traditionally bred role rather than the freedom of the media they once enjoyed making their own hours as a driver.

But there could be an option B motorists proselytizing their cars with Lyfts paraphernaliums much like Comma.ai and Cruise Automation offer the ability to convert vehicles previously on the road. Kapoor told TechCrunch it would be possible to proselytize automobiles once on the road and Luc Vincent, Lyfts brand-new VP of engineering who will head up the brand-new self-driving divide likewise seemed excited by the idea when I floated it.

Its not something Ive heard us talk about but its something to think about, Vincent said.
